Until an attorney is retained, responsible parties should keep track of all expenses that are incurred as a result of the decedent's death. When going to a law office, in order to start the probate of an estate, you should always bring a copy of the will, death certificate, and any certificates of title or other indications of property ownership. In addition, responsible parties need to make an inventory of all debts and all items which belonged to the decedent.
